Back in the early 1990s there was a movie called Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes, featuring a cop who was cryogenically frozen and re-awoken in the future to track down a notorious criminal.

A running joke in the movie centred on the use of three shells in the toilet that cleaned the user. It may have seemed a bit far-fetched at the time but a new self-cleaning toilet on show at the Consumer Electronics Exhibition in Las Vegas does just that.

A prototype of an intelligent toilet from Toto cleans the user with an aerated wand , which delivers water and warm air from a “seated position”.

Not only that, the toilet is also self-cleaning. The NEOREST AC WASHLET first cleans itself with electrolysed water after use. This so-called ewater+ has antibacterial properties. Next, the shower toilet actively fights dirt and bacteria using Actilight technology: The zirconium coating inside the toilet bowl is activated by the UV light integrated in the toilet seat lid, triggering a photocatalytic reaction which breaks down waste.

If someone can imagine something – one day it will be a reality. How long before we have self-repairing cisterns?
